chapter, I wanted to take a moment to look back.

Prelude to Descent is still one of those projects I don’t think I’ve fully wrapped my head around yet. Not because I don’t understand what I made, but because I’m still realizing what it has become.

At first, it was music.

Some of the earliest ideas go all the way back to 2016, with production demos for “Intrepid Sun,” “Prelude to Descent,” and “Eclipse the Moon.” At the time, I didn’t know those tracks would eventually become part of a larger world. I didn’t know they would lead into a full album, live performances, visual art, narration, or an audiobook.

I just knew there was something in the sound that I needed to follow.

And over time, that sound kept revealing more of itself.

What started as a collection of musical ideas slowly became something much bigger: a world-building project about resistance, control, denial, courage, and the strength it takes to remain human in a world that keeps trying to flatten us into something easier to manage.

That is what Prelude to Descent is really about for me.

It’s a reflection on the contemporary struggle between individual freedom and institutional control. It’s about the tension between human expression and systems that want obedience. It’s about technology, surveillance, corporate power, political chaos, and the quiet ways people can begin to accept decline as normal.

There’s a word that has been floating around a lot lately:

Normalization.

That idea sits at the center of this project.

How much can people be trained to accept before they realize what they’ve lost? How much chaos can be dressed up as business as usual? How far can things decline while people convince themselves that everything is still fine?

That, to me, is the cautionary side of Prelude to Descent.

It is an audible illustration of how far we can decline without even knowing it.

But I never wanted the project to only be about fear.

If anything, I wanted it to point toward something stronger: the strength of one individual to wake up, to question, to resist, and to choose differently. And beyond that, the power of people coming together once they realize they are not alone.

That’s where the story begins to open.

As the first installment of The TV Box Saga, Prelude to Descent laid the foundation for a much larger world. It built on some of the ideas that started with Fearless: An OMGjazz Ninja Saga, but pushed them into a darker and more expansive direction.

Musically, it also became one of the clearest expressions of what I’ve been calling Jazztronica.

Live saxophone. Electronic textures. Improvisation. Beats. Synths. Sound design. Visual art. Storytelling.

All of these elements working together to create something that feels less like a genre and more like an experience.

And that’s part of why I still believe this project is groundbreaking, even if it has flown under the radar for most people. It’s also why I feel the need to keep documenting what’s happening, whether people are watching yet or not.

Because Prelude to Descent isn’t just an album with a concept attached to it. It’s a project where the music, the story, the visuals, and the performance language are all connected. Each part expands the other.

The studio album was the first version of that world.

But the live album showed me what it could become.

Prelude to Descent (Live at the Sultan Room) captured a moment of arrival.
<iframe class="spotify-wrap album" data-attrs="{"image":"https://i.scdn.co/image/ab67616d0000b2732c9d208cc08622f7d395351a","title":"Prelude to Descent (Live at the Sultan front of an intimate but electric audience.

That night, the project stopped being something that only existed in recordings, demos, visuals, and imagination.

It became something alive in the room.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Philippe Lemm added the kind of live drum energy that changed the entire weight of the music. DJ Sach shaped the ambient textures, effects, and visual world around the sound. And I was able to move between saxophone, keys, Ableton Live, and live sonic manipulation in a way that felt like I was no longer just performing songs.

I was helping open a portal.

That might sound dramatic, but that’s really what it felt like.

The live album is not simply a replay of the studio album. It is the album transformed by presence.

You hear the breath between phrases. You hear the room reacting. You hear the tension and release of musicians building something together in real time. You hear the raw edges. You hear the risk.

The studio version is the architecture.

The live version is the room breathing inside it.

And on a personal level, that night also marked a shift for me.

For a long time, many people knew me primarily as a DJ/saxophonist. When the drums are reacting in real time. When the visuals are moving with the story. When narration becomes part of the composition. When the audience isn’t just listening, but witnessing the world take shape in front of them.

That is what FKAjazz Trio+ has opened up for me.

The trio is the core, but the “+” is where the possibilities expand. Live narrators. Visual artists. Animated storytellers. Different rooms. Different versions of the same world coming to life in new ways.

Looking back, I think Prelude to Descent gave me more than an album.

It gave me a direction.

It showed me that Jazztronica could be more than a sound. It could be a space for story, improvisation, community, visual imagination, and conversations about the world we’re living in.

And now, on the eve of new music, I’m not moving away from Prelude to Descent.

I’m going deeper into it.

The next release, tentatively titled Intrepid Sun: You Are the Sun Again, is a 5-track project that takes a deeper dive into the world of Prelude to Descent by introducing narration from the prologue of the audiobook.

This is something I’ve been building toward for a long time, because Prelude to Descent was never meant to be only a music release.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" music, art, and storytelling.

Literally.

I wrote and recorded a full audiobook for Prelude to Descent, featuring narration by Ginelle Bamfo and John Anthony Torres. This first EP release begins opening that side of the project by combining voiceover acting, expanded music, and new material inspired by “Intrepid Sun,” the opening track from the original album.

In a way, Intrepid Sun has always felt like the doorway into this world. The original title was literally “Keep This Door Open,” which I didn’t fully understand at the time, but feels almost too fitting now.

So it makes sense that this is where the next chapter begins.

The EP features voiceover acting by Ginelle Bamfo and Yvette Lanfranca, with music fully performed, recorded, and produced by me, FKAjazz. Having Yvette on this release feels especially full circle because she was the original voice actor for “Intrepid Sun,” back when the project was still taking shape. She’s a close friend of mine, had never done any voice acting before, and literally sent me the voiceover from her iPhone. Somehow, that early recording became part of the foundation for everything that followed.

Intrepid Sun: You Are the Sun Again is not just an alternate version of a song.

It is the first real glimpse of the audiobook world inside the music.

And that feels important to me, because this has always been the larger vision: to create albums that don’t just soundtrack a story, but become part of how the story is experienced.

Prelude to Descent was the beginning of the descent.

The live album showed what could happen when that world entered the room.

And now, Intrepid Sun – Storyline EP begins opening the story itself.

More soon.

— FKAjazz

Why So Much underneath a lot of what I am building.

Why do so many artists sound the same?

Not in the sense that everyone is making identical music, but in the sense that so much of what rises to the surface seems to live in familiar patterns. Familiar sounds. Familiar structures. Familiar aesthetics. Familiar emotional cues.

And just as interesting to me is the other side of it:

Why do so many people seem comfortable with that?

I do not think it is because people want art to feel flat.

I think people want something they can enter quickly.

Something they can recognize. Something they can process. Something that gives them a feeling of orientation before it asks anything more of them.

That is part of why familiarity has so much power.

It gives people a doorway.

The more we hear something, the more natural it starts to feel.
The easier something is to process, the easier it is to return to.
The more we see other people validating it, the more it begins to feel culturally real.
And often, the music people attach to becomes part of how they see themselves and where they belong.

<a class="image-link image2 reflecting on something I kept hearing from people in the room.

They knew they had experienced something different, even if they could not fully explain why.

They knew it felt immersive. They knew it felt alive. They knew it felt like more than a band playing songs.

That difference does not come from any one element alone. It comes from layers.

For me, Jazztronica has never been just about blending jazz and electronic music. That is part of it, of course. But the deeper truth is that Jazztronica becomes what it is because multiple creative layers are working together at once. Live instrumentation. Synths and electronics. Visual art. Animation. Storytelling. All of it held together by exploratory improvisation and by what I believe is the truest spirit of jazz: its ability to reflect the times it is living in.

And what excites me the most—knowing that this is still only the beginning.

These ideas are still developing. The language is still expanding. The live experience is still taking shape in real time. There is something deeply exciting about that — about knowing we are not presenting a finished formula, but building a living form that still has room to grow.
<div of the very things that made it so powerful to begin with. Jazz has always evolved. It has always absorbed. It has always responded to the world around it. To me, Jazztronica is one expression of that living tradition. Not a departure from it, but an extension of it.

At the center of what we do is improvisation.

That is where the music keeps its pulse. It is where risk lives. It is where emotion becomes immediate. It is where the performance breathes in real time instead of simply repeating a fixed idea. Improvisation is what allows the music to stay human, even when it is surrounded by technology, visuals, and larger conceptual frameworks. It is also what allows every performance to become its own version of the work.

In our case, the live instrumentation begins with saxophone, drums, and synths.

The saxophone carries breath, voice, phrasing, urgency, and vulnerability. It can cut through the atmosphere or disappear inside it. It can speak, cry, push, whisper, and provoke. The drums bring motion, grounding, momentum, and conversation. The synths add another live dimension, often creating texture, harmony, and atmosphere in real time, especially around the narrative parts of the set. Together, these instruments keep the sound from becoming static. They give it body. They give it friction. They give it life.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" part of the performance, helping us build a wider sonic environment around what is happening on stage. Some of it happens through loops and layered textures that open space for the music to breathe and evolve in different directions. And some of it happens through the way I process the saxophone itself, shaping it into something that can feel more futuristic, more elastic, and more at home inside the larger sonic world we are building.

That electronic dimension matters because it lets the music stretch beyond the boundaries of a traditional ensemble sound.

It allows us to build not just a groove or a progression, but a fuller environment. A sense of scale. A sense of atmosphere. A sense that the music is unfolding inside a larger universe. It also reflects the actual time we are living in. We live in an age shaped by machines, media, distortion, digital layering, and near-infinite sonic possibility. To ignore that in the music would feel incomplete.

Then there is the visual side.

The art and animation are not there as decoration. They are part of the language of the performance. They help turn the music into an environment people can enter. They help extend the emotional world of the sound. They create symbols, textures, characters, and visual atmospheres that deepen what the audience is already hearing.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

That matters because we are not just interested in presenting songs. We are interested in building experiences.

And once you move in that direction, storytelling naturally becomes essential too.

Storytelling gives the work another dimension of meaning. It creates arc. It creates context. It creates the possibility that a performance is not just a sequence of pieces, but part of a larger unfolding. Sometimes the storytelling is explicit, through narration, visual cues, or defined characters. Other times it is more subtle, living inside the mood, the pacing, the transitions, or the world suggested by the music itself. Either way, it gives the audience something deeper to step into.

This is where Jazztronica becomes bigger than a genre label.

Because at that point, it is no longer only about sound. It becomes a full creative ecosystem. Music, art, animation, story, performance, improvisation — all feeding each other. Each layer sharpening the others. Each layer helping create an experience that feels more immersive, more alive, and more reflective of the way we actually hear and imagine the work.

For us, that is what makes Jazztronica feel whole.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" It is not live instruments sitting on top of programmed tracks. It is not visuals added at the end to make the show feel bigger. It is a layered form. A living one. One where each element has a purpose and where the full experience depends on how those elements interact.

At its best, Jazztronica feels like a world unfolding in real time.

The improvisation keeps it alive. The saxophone, drums, and synths keep it human. The electronics expand the atmosphere and push it forward. The art and animation deepen the environment. The storytelling gives it shape and resonance. And underneath all of it is the same spirit that has always made jazz matter: the willingness to respond to the present and create something honest from inside it.

That is the sound we are years of preparation. Years of writing. Recording the narrative with my actors Ginelle Bamfo and John Anthony Torres. Staging the art pieces that became the foundation for the animation. Beginning the process of world-building. Workshopping the music. Slowly pulling together all of these different creative threads and trusting that one day they would meet in a live setting the way I imagined they could.

And somehow, that night in Brooklyn, they did.

Nolan Byrd — aka Byrdman — brought a fresh energy on drums that truly lifted the music beyond the original production. In the same way Philippe Lemm brought his own spirit and depth to the music at our Sultan Room show, Nolan brought a unique and personal vibe that helped the set take on a new life in real time.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" in 2022 when I got added to a Spotify playlist by that name.

What struck me immediately was that much of the music in the playlist didn’t really have much to do with electronica at all. A lot of it was simply “non-traditional” jazz by artists who didn’t fit the marketable sound that the music industry has standardized as jazz.

Jazztronica is a reader-supported publication. In many spaces, jazz has come to mean music that resembles a particular era of the past, especially the so-called golden ages from the 1930s through the 1960s. But if you follow the actual trajectory of the music, jazz has never stood still. The jazz of the 1920s sounded different from the jazz of the 1930s. The 1930s sounded different from the 1940s. The 1940s gave way to something different in the 1950s, and on and on. The music evolved because the world evolved, and the artists evolved with it.

That, to me, is one of the most essential truths of jazz.

And yet somewhere along the way, that truth started to get lost.

In my opinion, a lot of that standardization grew as jazz became institutionalized in conservatories and universities across America and eventually around the world. So much of the teaching centered on studying the greats: Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and so many others. There is value in that, of course. But one of the most important lessons often felt missing in the classrooms I sat in: that the music’s deepest tradition is not repetition. It is evolution.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

At some point, especially around the 1980s, it felt like the genre split in two directions. On one side were those focused on “preserving the tradition,” which often meant keeping the music within already accepted boundaries. On the other were those trying to push the music forward, but often in ways that became increasingly abstract and disconnected from the average listener. In both cases, a certain culture took hold that felt more intellectual than visceral.

Too often, the room felt centered on critique rather than connection.

The audience sat. They watched. They evaluated. The energy was less about feeling and more about whether the artist met a certain standard of virtuosity, complexity, or seriousness. It became less about the full experience of music as art, body, and emotion, and more about who could play the fastest, smartest, or loudest. That is a generalization, yes, but it was real enough that I felt it deeply. It was one of the things that pushed me to step away from jazz as an environment and start exploring other genres and approaches to music.

At a certain point, I was burnt out.

I was tired of pouring my heart out on stage for seated crowds who stared back almost emotionless. I wanted to perform for people who came to move. To dance. To party. To feel something in their bodies.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Live at Smalls with Jaleel Shaw, E.J. And over time, I built a life as a working DJ and saxophonist, bringing live improvisation into electronic spaces and finding ways to make those performances feel more alive.

But eventually, that came with its own limitations too.

As someone with a deep harmonic vocabulary, the oversimplification that can happen in electronic music started to feel creatively restricting. I enjoyed being able to improvise over tracks and give my DJ sets a live element, but I also began to feel the absence of other things I cared about deeply: composition, tempo shifts, time changes, dynamic interplay, and the chemistry of creating with other musicians and artists in real time.

I missed the deeper musical conversation.

So in many ways, what I’m doing now feels like a natural progression.

I went from performing as a jazz musician, to becoming an electronic producer, to working as an electronic DJ/saxophonist, to building as a Jazztronica artist. In truth, I’m still all of those things in some way. But if I had to choose the one that gets closest to my heart, it would be Jazztronica.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Performing at Soul in the Horn (photo by Justin Swiney)

Jazztronica is just a name. But it’s the closest name I’ve found for what I believe my music actually sounds and feels like.

I understand why some artists choose to describe what they do as Black American music, and in many ways I agree with that framing. It rejects a word that was imposed on a music many of its creators did not necessarily use for themselves. I respect that deeply. But when it comes to communicating clearly with a broader audience, I’m willing to start with the word Jazztronica because it gives people an immediate reference point.

When most people hear the word jazz, a certain sound comes to mind. When they hear electronic or electronica, another sound and feeling comes to mind. My work lives in the collision of those worlds.

That is where the core of my sound comes from.

But even that only tells part of the story.

Because for me, the music is bigger than the music alone. It expands into a larger culture made up of music, art, and storytelling. Maybe fashion too. It becomes a full creative language. A world. A way of experiencing sound that is not confined to a record, a genre label, or a live set alone.

That’s why I say I’m building beyond jazz.

Not because I reject its history. Not because I don’t honor the lineage. But because I believe the truest spirit of jazz was never meant to be boxed in. It was meant to keep moving. Keep absorbing. Keep transforming with the times. Keep finding new forms.

And to be clear, I’m not talking about artists like Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, James Francies, Immanuel Wilkins, Theo Croker, or Nate Smith. There are artists who absolutely understand what I’m trying to get at here. Artists who know that the music has to breathe in the present tense.

I’m talking about the mindset that took a particular era of jazz, sealed it in a box, and decided that if the music doesn’t sound like that, then it somehow no longer belongs.

To me, that mindset is exactly what limits the rightful place this music should hold.

Because jazz should not be treated like a museum piece.

It should be at the forefront of modern music. In conversation with culture. In conversation with technology. In conversation with the realities of the time we’re living in now.

That’s the space I’m trying to build from.

Not outside the lineage, but in continuation of its deepest impulse.

Forward.

— FKAjazz

Jazztronica is a reader-supported publication. production, or electronic music decorated with live instrumentation. It is a way of creating that brings together improvisation, sound design, rhythm, atmosphere, and narrative intention. It draws from the spirit of jazz—its spontaneity, expression, and humanity—while embracing the textures and expanded possibilities of electronic music and modern production.

But more than that, Jazztronica is about building experiences that feel immersive and alive.

It is music that can move between the stage and the studio. Music that leaves room for risk, emotion, and discovery. Music that can carry story, visual identity, and world-building without losing its pulse. The goal, at least for me, has never been to fit neatly inside an existing category. It has been to make work that feels honest to how I hear, how I perform, and how I imagine sound functioning in a larger artistic universe.

<a I’ll share new music, live performances, behind-the-scenes reflections, and thoughts on the ideas shaping Jazztronica as both a sound and a growing sub-genre. Others will go deeper into process, philosophy, and the wider cultural questions that come with trying to help define something still taking form.

If you’ve been following my work already, thank you for being here.
